The Hard Wok Cafe in Liberty is easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Upstate. Don't let the restaurant decor and layout fool you, it's actually meant to be a "hole in the wall, family Chinese restaurant". If you've ever been to Chinatown in San Francisco - you'd actually consider Hard Wok Of Liberty clean and tidy.

Lilly, Hard Wok's owner, says she set up shop in Liberty because she likes the small town atmosphere and she likes to know everyone like family. She always treats my family with a smile and very personalized service.

Hard Wok's prices, especially for lunch, are hard to beat for a meal in Liberty ~ even beating Hardee's after coupons.

Hard Wok's location makes it easy to get to and find parking, plus it's convenient for your grocery shopping trip at Ingles.

The lunch buffet is $5.75 + tax and served 11AM to 3PM each day. (Closed Mondays)

Lilly usually keeps a number of items on the buffet, but will make just about anything you want for the price of the buffet; if it isn't already out.

Hard Wok's giant 200+ item menu is served all day.

Speaking of one of my favorite dishes that I discovered at Hard Wok Of Liberty, Lilly says:

"Vegetable & Egg Chow Mei Fun ~ You eat "happy" … I'm happy!"

Lilly was born in China and later moved to New York. Her brother later opened several Chinese restaurants in Spartanburg, but Lilly wanted a location of her own in a small town, where she could know not only regulars, but be a part of a community that was like a family.

One tidbit I learned from Lilly was that Sesame Chicken and General Tsao's Chicken are the same thing, but General Tsao's Chicken has hot peppers mixed in when cooking and doesn't have sesame seeds sprinkled on top.

I've tasted a number of items on the menu including ... Chicken Egg Foo Yung, House Fried Rice, Broccolli Chicken, Pepper Steak, Lo Mein Noodles, Egg Drop Soup, Won Ton Soup, Egg Rolls, and more ~ all of it is as tasty as you're imagining it right now.

Lilly's daughter goes to Liberty Middle.
