South Carolina Sales Tax Holiday On August 6, 2010

The 11th annual "Tax Free Weekend" in South Carolina begins at 12:01AM Friday August 6, 2010 and ends at 11:59PM Sunday, August 8, 2010.

South Carolina state law requires that the first weekend in August be "tax free" for purchases related to school; such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and linens.

The weekend has become the 3rd busiest shopping period of the year following the weekend before Christmas and the weekend after Thanksgiving, officials said.

South Carolina adopted the sales tax holiday in 2000.

This equals a savings of 6% to 7%.

Included in the state’s list of items in South Carolina that will be tax-exempt are sports uniforms, handbags, personal digital assistants (Smartphones must be applied for a credit), riding pants, and ski masks.

The link above also contains a form to apply for an exemption. For example, if you need a large screen LCD television for presentation purposes as a teacher or student or if you need a computer part that may be school related - you take the form to the merchant. You may have to do a bit of wrangling with the manager of the establishment to get him or her to understand - but delivering this form is ALL YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PRESENT TO THE MERCHANT!

Remember, you can get the exemption if you are a preacher, or a computer specialist, or SPC manager, or at work trainer.
