"It is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once."
~ David Hume
While sources such as Wikipedia paint Hume as an atheist - other sources portray his writing as lightly battling the underpinning of the Catholic Church. Had he gone further, he would have been accused of heresy - so it seems a lot of his words have been misinterpreted to have more meaning than they actually did.
From Wikipedia:
Hume achieved great literary fame as a historian. His enormous The History of Great Britain, tracing events from the Saxon kingdoms to the Glorious Revolution, was a best-seller in its day. In it, Hume presented political man as a creature of habit, with a disposition to submit quietly to established government unless confronted by uncertain circumstances.
The "texting while driving" issue has really gotten me thinking about this quote lately. It's enforcement is the bull's warm wet breath on the downed matador's cheek.
