Liberty is last out of the seven municipalities in Pickens County for recycling. Over the last few months, Pickens County Council has been plotting (and planning) to integrate "recycling percentage minimums" for each municipality. The target is 25% recycled of all trash collected. For every percentage/ton under 25%, Liberty city residents face a fine of $35 per ton. For every ton over 25% that is recycled ... Liberty will be rewarded $35 per ton. As of February 7th, 2010, Liberty is at 14%. At present, this equals roughly 15 tons per month. If this plan were integrated today ... Liberty would be fined $525 for the month of February. If nothing were done to improve that number AND it remained flat at 14% for the rest of 2010, the City of Liberty would be fined $6300."Where would the City get this money" you may ask. They would be forced to raise the money by adding to the water/sewer bills - which are already extremely oppressive.
I don't know what the city's plans are - none have been discussed publicly. I have asked the Mayor and City Council to use this site as a mouthpiece for anything they would like to say to residents. I've also asked that the city website be updated more frequently and that this issue be addressed there.
I'm trying hard to do my part and requesting your cooperation so that we don't have higher water/sewer bills come May 2010.
PLEASE go by City Hall Monday thru Friday 9AM to 5PM and get two recycle bins if you don't have them.
Start collecting, at the very least; your milk containers, shampoo bottles, dish detergent bottles, mouthwash bottles, and Coke & Pepsi bottles, plus your aluminum drinking cans.
Seriously, this isn't even a lifestyle change, there's no extra effort. It's a matter of putting some trash somewhere else.
My family of 4 produces about 15 pounds of plastic and glass a week. (We reuse or don't use that much plastic and we recycle our own aluminum for our own profit.)
Call The Pickens County Recycling Facility to check for the times when recycling pick up is on your street.
(864) 850-7092
YOU MUST CALL THE NUMBER ABOVE AND GET ON A "PICK UP LIST" or your recycling will NOT be picked up.
Read this article I wrote about building a recycling plan:

Liberty, this is very important.
