
Phillip Bowers, Chair of the Pickens County Republican Party introduced himself and mentioned that the Pickens GOP focuses on getting people involved in the Republican Party in Pickens County and helps with election funding - even in city council races - mentioning that local government is where great Republicans are born. He mentioned the need for young people to get involved as it's hard to unseat an incumbent.
Liberty City Councilman Rick Clark was present.
Representative Rex Rice was the guest speaker.
Rice made an analogy about how bad Hurricane Hugo was and how clean the air felt the next day. He said that's how it's beginning to feel in the State of South Carolina and on the Federal level - especially after the win of Republican Scott Brown for the Senate Seat in Massachusetts held by Democrat Ted Kennedy.
He polled the audience to ask who was a pessimist or optimist, alluding to the analogy of the glass being half empty or half full. He jokingly said he was a "realist" who knows the glass needs to be washed.
He expressed his thoughts on implementing a drug test to receive State assistance.
He mentioned a resolution to stop Employment Security Commission (SCESC) from paying benfits to those who were fired for cause.
After an audience question about immigration burdening social service programs in the state,
Rice mentioned that illegal immigrants shouldn't be here.
He moved on to talk about his legislation on the Virtual School Bill.
He said South Carolina was second in the nation on this front.
"It's amazing South Carolina can be number two in education in anything," Rice said.
Rice also mentioned:
"You can have fair trade or you can have free trade."
"Low to no corporate income tax would help draw business to the state."
