Liberty Woman Burned Badly By Wood Burning Heater

As reported by The Anderson Independent:

A Liberty woman was flown to the Augusta burn unit Thursday night with 2nd & 3rd degree burns following an accident with a wood-burning heater.

Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson said the unidentified 34-year-old was in the living room of her mobile home on Shadow Hills Drive trying to light the heater when flames flashed from it and set her clothes on fire.

Gibson said firefighters arrived at the house and contained the fire.

“It appears she had put some type of flammable liquid, maybe kerosene, on the wood,” Gibson said. “This caused the fire to flash. She had some of the fluid on her clothes, too.”

Gibson said MedTrans flew the woman to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia.

He said the woman suffered burns to her torso, neck and head.

“She may also have burned her lungs by inhaling the flames,” he said. “She was having trouble breathing.”

“This is a very tragic situation,” Gibson said. “Anytime you start a fire it’s important not to use flammable liquids.”

“For anyone using a space heater it’s important to keep it at least three feet away from combustibles like bedding, furniture or curtains.”

Not that this has any relation to this story but ... I was just down in Augusta this past weekend - one topic of conversation for the drive down was getting a wood burning stove. We also drove by the Joseph M. Still Burn Center - which I didn't know existed.

This is the same burn center that Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker was taken to when he was involved in a plane crash in Columbia, South Carolina in September of 2008.
