About a month ago, I started teaching my six year old son to save by giving him rolls of pennies rather than two quarters for completed chores or good behavior.
He views two quarters or a dollar bill as something that's easily received and easily spent. He sees 50¢ as a lollipop. He sees a $1 bill as a Strawberry or Grape Fanta from Spinx.
As a family, we walk a lot (for exercise & activity). We find pennies everywhere. About every two weeks, we find enough pennies to make a complete 50¢ roll.
My son and I enjoy going to SunTrust in downtown Liberty, asking for some penny roll paper, then going home and rolling up our pennies.
I've been giving him 25¢ a week for chores and good behavior - most of the time, at the end of two weeks I just give him a roll of pennies and let him add it to a large glass container that sits on our dining room table.
In April of this year we took a family trip to Daytona Beach. While there, one night we treated ourselves to a nice dinner out at Olive Garden - all paid for with the pennies we've been collecting over the last year.
We've mentioned to my six year old that one of our future destinations may be Las Vegas. He's interested in going mostly because I've shown him the pictures of the 10 acre pools at some of the hotels.
"That's for our trip to Las Vegas!"
